Bracelet by Isaac Dial at the NMAI Art Market

My sister Andrea has a discerning eye for art.  She has a particular passion for native art that not only tells a story, but also proliferates a culture.  We both collect Inuit sculpture and prints, following in the footsteps of our dad, who used to do research in the Arctic back in the day and trade with the local people for their works of art.

Andrea saw the listing for the Art Market at the National Museum of the American Indian on the 2011 Holiday Markets Guide and called to tell me about Isaac Dial, one of the country’s most talented, young Native American jewelry designers, who will be showing his collection at the market.

Isaac’s work combines the highest levels of craftsmanship of traditional Navajo artisans with a modern design sensibility.  His jewelry features angular, bold geometry combined with traditional turquoise, bone, coral, shell, and colorful stones.  He also creates delicate jewelry and sculptural boxes with beautiful butterflies, bees and flowers.  The designs and details are exquisite.

The bracelet in the photo is made in sterling silver with green jade, walrus ivory, fossilized elephant ivory and Lone Mountain turquoise. The interior of the bracelet is cocobolo wood with impressions of landscapes, elements (wind, rain) and symbols of native culture.

Andrea was right again, of course.

Come meet Isaac Dial in person, along with 35 incredibly talented Native American artists, at the NMAI Art Market this Saturday and Sunday (sneek preview on Friday for ticket holders).  And I recommend you take home a piece of Isaac’s jewelry because the world is already recognizing his incredible talent.

Another awesome Holiday Giveaway coming soon!  Stay tuned!

Since I’ve been shopping for gifts in the artisanal holiday markets around the city, everyone wants me to pick them in gift exchanges.  They know that whomever I pick will get the most awesome, special, unique, beautifully made gifts under the tree.  And I’m not exaggerating one bit – just ask my family!

It’s more important than ever to support the small businesses in the markets.  The markets enable local entrepreneurs to build their business, reach a passionate clientele, and grow.  So I thought I’d go out to the holiday markets and feature some of the people and companies selling their very special products this year in the Union Square Holiday Market, the Columbus Circle Holiday Market, the Holiday Village at Bryant Park, and the Jingle Market:

Waiting for Thankgiving Turkeys from DiPaola at the Union Square Greenmarket

This morning, we were walking in the grey drizzle and saw this line for people waiting to pick up their pre-ordered turkeys from DiPaola Turkey Farm at the Union Square Greenmarket.  We walked by two other Greenmarkets on our way to work too, all brimming with red apples, purple turnips, green broccoli, and my beloved brussels sprout trees.

I snapped this picture with my iPhone.  It’s not a beautiful scene, nobody is smiling, and yet they’re all out first thing in the morning, waiting patiently to pick up their plump turkeys that they took the care to order weeks ago.  It’s the spirit of New Yorkers, out in the rain, determined to have a lovely holiday regardless of the weather or the economy.

And if you’re the cook with a burning question, contact the ever amazing New York Times Thanksgiving Help Line.

Happy Thanksgiving, All!

See you at the markets on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday!  Here’s the complete 2011 Holiday Markets Guide for the season!

Fantasy Clock - Incredible Details

Fantasy Clocks is a Featured Artisan at Brooklyn Craft Central’s Holiday Market Saturday & Sunday, December 17th & 18th, 2011

Richard Birkett of Fantasy Clocks makes some of the most fun and fascinating timepieces around. He has been making his inventive clocks since being captured by aliens in 1984. Built around a Seiko movement and available in a range of sizes, Fantasy Clocks combine springs, gauges, model planes, postcards and all kinds of mechanical parts into wonderfully unique, kinetic sculptures.

We met Richard and took these photos of his clocks at the Bleecker Street Craft Fair in June, but you might have seen him at Crafts on Columbus or the Washington Square Outdoor Arts Festival as well. Richard is a featured artist at the Brooklyn Craft Central Holiday Market on December 17th and 18th, of which Markets of New York City is a proud sponsor.

Lauren Wimmer Hand-Dyed Silk Wrapped Jewelry

Lauren Wimmer Jewelry features lush, textured, jewelry designs.  Lauren launched her design firm in 2003, and she has sold her works in New York’s best design markets, grand art museums, and fine department stores, including Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel.

The pieces in her “Wrapped” Collection are unique in that she wraps brass rings in hand-dyed silk ribbon to create colorful, playful necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, like the lovely blue cuff pictured. “Cast” is a collection of  sterling silver jewelry based on “textures and palettes of overgrown gardens.”  Intrigued?  You definitely have to see – and touch – these pieces in person.

And you can do just that this season at the Grand Central Holiday Fair, which opens today!  Lauren is also selling her work in the Independent Designer Pop Shop in Chelsea Market through November 27th.

COMING SOON: 2011 Holiday Markets Guide!

Until just a few years ago, I thought of heirloom items as Grandma’s lace doilies and tomatoes.  So imagine my delight when I discovered heirloom seeds (auctioned off at Sotheby’s no less) for heirloom vegetables, and heritage breeds of farm animals that are truly a part of our national history.

So when I learned about the new Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook (Sterling Epicure, October 2011) from my friends at SchoolHouse Kitchen, I was very excited to see it.  Sure enough, it is a splendid cookbook!  See how you can win a copy of your very own below!

You may know the authors, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge from their show The Fabulous Beekman Boys on Planet Green TV.  They left New York City and moved Sharon Springs, NY to start a goat farm.  They also have a skipping llama named Polka Spot.  And now they have created this lovely cook book to share their delicious recipes, many of them heirlooms themselves.

In their cookbook, written with Sandy Gluck, the recipes are arranged by season.  I opened up to the Fall section, which instantly invoked the most sentimental, feelings, tastes and smells of the harvest season and Thanksgiving.  Each chapter is divided helpfully into Starters, Main Dishes, Side Dishes, and Desserts.  Other wonderful features include three pockets where you can write down and store your own recipes.  Each recipe page also has a space for your notes.  If you make fortuitous adjustments to the recipes, you can share your results with the Beekman 1802 community on the website.  The idea is for each recipe to continue to evolve and improve.  You can also download additional recipe cards that fit into the book’s pockets.

The book itself includes gorgeous photography of the dishes and produce from the Beekman 1802 farm, styled and photographed to resemble Dutch master still-life paintings.  The sweet swirls, fonts, and small illustrations add whimsy and dimension to the pages.

James and I decided to try two recipes for our weekly Sunday Family Dinner to celebrate our friend George’s birthday: Roasted Beet and Goat Cheese Salad, and Cheese Toast Topped Onion Soup.  Both were a huge hit.  One of our discerning friends declared that she had never had a better onion soup!  Later on that week, James made Roast Chicken with Potatoes and Rosemary, which was absolutely delicious!

With permission, I’d like to share with you the Cheese Toast Topped Onion Soup recipe (page 88) after the photo gallery below.  Try all of the wonderful seasonal recipes in the cookbook and let us know your favorites!

Win your own copy of the Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook simply by signing up for the Markets of New York City Newsletter! I’ll pick a winner on Saturday, November 19th, in time for Thanksgiving!

Recipe: Cheese Toast-Topped Onion Soup

Summary: Wonderfully Easy and Incredibly Tasty

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 1/2 pounds large yellow onions, halved, peeled, and thinly sliced (8 cups)
  • 4 springs fresh thyme or 3/4 teaspoon dried
  • 3/4 cup red wine
  • 2 tablespoons sherry
  • 6 cups chicken stock or reduced sodium canned broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 8 slices crusty country bread
  • 1/3 pound Blaak cheese or Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. In a 5-auart Dutch ove, heat the oil and butter over medium-low heat. Add the onions and thyme, cover, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft, about 20 minutes. Uncover and cook, stirring frequently, until golden brown, about 35 minutes.
  2. Stir in the red wine and sherry, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Ad the stock, salt, and pepper to taste, bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook for 30 minutes to concentrate the flavors.
  3. Preheat the broiler.
  4. Divide the soup among 8 soup bowls. Cut each slice of bread in half and place on a baking sheet or broiler pan. Top with the cheese. Broil the cheese toasts 4 to 6 inches from the heat for 2 minutes, or until the cheese has melted. Place 2 slices in each bowl of soup.
