Weekend Market Picks: July 9-10, 2011 + Cherries!!!

It is going to be a fantastic weekend to spend outdoors in New York City. If you are second homeless and therefore staying in town all summer, then come hang out with me at the markets. And if you are visiting New York City, definitely check out the fantastic food and buy all your souvenirs directly from New York’s finest artisans!

And stop by any Greenmarket to pick up plump, juicy cherries, like the ones in the photo from the Cheerful Cherry Farm!

Brooklyn Flea: I’m definitely feeling the need to visit the Brooklyn Flea, as it’s been a few weeks. Looking forward to seeing my usual favorites and checking out what’s new in food, artisans, and fleas! Saturday in the Ft. Green location and Sunday in Williamsburg.

Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market and Sunday Gourmet Food Truck Bazaar: The Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market is one of the largest and best traditional fleas in the city, and they have invited members of the {NewNew} Etsy Artisan Group to add to the variety. The first Sunday of every month, they also host the Food Truck Bazaar, featuring some of the city’s fabulous food on wheels!

Hester Street Fair: Gotta send you to the Hester Street Fair this Saturday! In addition to the well-selected vintage, flea, and handmade sellers there, they sent out the list of featured food vendors. Appetizers, main course, main course, dessert, dessert, dessert. Take notes and let me know what you ate!

St. George Greenmarket: This is a good weekend to hop on the Staten Island Ferry and visit the St. George Greenmarket. It overlooks the harbor and the New York City skyline, and it features premier Greenmarket sellers of fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, seafood, and more. This borough features amazing vistas, architecture, and even wildlife – more than 117 species of birds!

Astoria Market: Yes! The Astoria Market is back this weekend. Handmade and vintage goods at this artisan market in the Main Hall of the Bohemian Hall — you know, the one with the Beer Garden! Check out some of the very cool products you’ll find there this weekend on the Astoria Market Blog!

New Amsterdam Market: The New Amsterdam Market is back this Sunday after a July 4th hiatus. This weekend’s food market lineup includes breads, meats, mead, lobster rolls, artisanal sodas, sweets, imported tea, and many more edible luxuries.

I met designer Samuel Guillén of Sego Jewelry at Artists and Fleas in Williamsburg this past weekend. I was drawn to his simple and sleek display, which featured fine, geometric, handmade jewelry with a modern and architectural look. Sego’s Silver Bead and Wire Cuff has little beads that travel up and down a silver matrix around your wrist. This kinetic design move as you move, giving it an extra dimension. The cuff pictured isn’t kinetic, but the angles and layers make it quite striking. Pull on that black power suit and funkiest glasses because this bracelet will command attention, and you must be prepared for all of it.

Photo of the Day – July 10, 2010: Hobbit Rare Books and Prints

Beautiful Prints from Hobbit Rare Books and Prints at the Antiques Garage

Looking for prints of ducks or quail to decorate your Hamptons library? Or Victorian images of palm trees to enhance the walls of your tiny apartment in the city? You need only go up to the second floor of the Antiques Garage to find multiple tables strewn with hundreds of old prints and books from Hobbit Rare Books and Prints. The subject matter is practically infinite, from birds and animals, to plants and palm trees, to architecture and history. Proprietor Arby Rolband is extremely knowledgeable about his collection, and he can help you find exactly what you seek. On occasion, he will bring a collection of rare artworks to the Garage, complete with history and provenance. He is also a font of stories about this particular market and the cast of characters that have wander through over the years.

Come and explore this wonderful antiques and flea market today — it is the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon. I will be signing books here today from 12 -3 at West 25th Street between Broadway and 6th Ave.

The Brooklyn Flea Continues to Blow My Socks Off

As I braved the frigid weather to get to the Brooklyn Flea’s new indoor market, I wondered what kind of indoor space could possibly accommodate the large number of vendors and the crowds of shoppers. I got out of the subway station and asked a nice lady if she knew where One Hanson Place was. “It’s right in front of you, honey,” she said. “That huuuuuge building right on the corner.”

One Hanson Place used to house the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. The tallest building in Brooklyn, the former bank’s lobby/event space is absolutely gorgeous, with marble everywhere, vaulted ceilings, soaring columns, and the old bank teller windows and lamps. Every weekend through March, it is filled with over 100 flea market vendors and artisans.

The vendors’ shops fill the main walkway, and they spill over into every nook and cranny, including side hallways, upstairs offices and overlooks. Definitely do not miss the old bank vault downstairs. It still houses treasures, only now they’re in the form of lobster rolls from the Red Hook Lobster Pound, handmade chocolates from Nunu, McClure’s pickles, and much more.

I picked out a beautiful, sturdy tote bag from Loyalty and Blood. I also ran into australianScent and got to tell them that my scary winter elbows are soft and supple with their Balm of Gilead moisturizer that I had purchased at the Brooklyn Flea’s Gifted Market. In addition to Rain Lily’s gorgeous handcrafted, fair trade silk scarves, she also had tiny “dhokra,” or lost wax, figurines from India. (Rachel Ray bought the horse on Sunday, but I’m partial to the piggies.) The old typewriter photograph from She Hit Pause Studios, housed upstairs, is gorgeous and inspirational.

I met some new people as well. John Murphy’s dreamy and colorful prints and photographs stopped me in my tracks. He uses all of my favorite colors – orange, pink, robin’s egg blue, and more. I also fell in love with Paula Hill’s vintage buttons. She knows the history of every single button, including Bakelite and earlier plastics from the early 1900’s. I’ll show you her vintage Valentine’s in a week or two!

The Brooklyn Flea’s winter home is just as fun and adventurous as their outdoor venues. Thank goodness we don’t have to wait until spring to shop at the Flea!
