Buddha Switch Plate Covers by Lovely Day Designs
Louise Lasson is the artisan behind Lovely Day Designs.  I saw first her work at the Brooklyn Flea Gifted Market in 2009, and she keeps on adding more creative designs and products to her line.

She is known for her extremely wide array of switch plate covers!  Everything from Buddhas and Mermaids, to Flowers, Cats, Pinup Girls and beyond to dress up your walls in a fun, unexpected way!  She also sells delightful magnet sets.  Her lovely soy wax candles are hand-poured into Depression Glass pieces and vintage teacups, and they are beautifully scented. What I love about Louise’s work is that it is creative, lovely, and practical, the essence of fine craft.

Louise is a member of the {NewNew} Etsy Artisans Street Team.  Check LovelyDayDesigns.com for all her Holiday Market events.  Her pieces are perfect for hostesses and for anyone who has light switches in their home.

Here are this week’s Market Picks!  Meh to snow in October!!!

Saturday and Sunday

Artists and Fleas: Artists & Fleas is an excellent choice for this ridiculously snowy weekend!  It features amazing vintage clothing and craft vendors, and it is indoors!  Plus it’s a great place to get a groovy Halloween costume that you might actually wear again in real life!

Antiques Garage: This large indoor flea market has not one but TWO floors of antique and vintage treasures, including clothing, jewelry, home decor, artifacts, rare antique books and prints, and many more things that cannot even be categorized!

Saturday

Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket: Halloween comes to the Greenmarket!  Bring the kids for Pumpkin Painting, the Pumpkin Carving Contest (bring your already carved pumpkins, winner gets a prize!), and an Apple Cider Donut Eating Contest!

Hester Street Fair: CANCELED due to impending weather! Double booooo!!!  Thanks for another great season!

Smorgasburg: For true food lovers, it doesn’t matter if it’s snowing outside.  They will still flock to Smorgasburg for some of the tastiest, most innovative food in the city.  Serious delciousness going on here, with around 75 food vendors, plus the Williamsburg Waterfront Greenmarket!

Sunday

Fulton Stall Market: Another great place to bring the kids, the closest thing I’ve seen to matching Boston’s SOWA Market of the Living Dead for Halloween fun is at the Fulton Stall Market!  In addition to their great lineup of food, craft, and farmer vendors, the market will have pumpkin painting, appearances by Berenstain Bears, Curious George and Maisy with readings of their favorite spooky stories, trick or treating, and a dance party with DJ Jonathan “Scary” Toubin (2pm). Kids kids kids!

Grab your tote bag, pull on your boots, and head to the Markets!

As I walked through the market this week, I noticed the beautiful, bright variations of the color orange.  Here are some of the fresh and delicious products I found at the Union Square Greenmarket during the week to remind us that summer is still with us.  Enjoy all of the seasonal wonders of local foods at our farmers markets throughout the city.  The photo gallery features these items and farms:

This weekend, I’m focusing on Food and Farmers Markets! All the best trends come out of the markets, so here’s a little tidbit to think about as you stroll through the markets this weekend, nibbling on a meatball or a cake pop:: Food in the form of a ball is the new Cupcake!

Saturday and Sunday, August 20 & 21

Chelsea Market: Chelsea Market is an indoor market filled with foodie pleasures.  I often have breakfast meetings here, or I’ll pop in for a cookie or a taste of chocolate.  That’s the great thing about this market: you can also have brunch, lunch and dinner here, or pick up fine fresh, local, and imported ingredients for a special meal.

Saturday, August 20

Hester Street Fair:  I foresee about 19 courses in a meal at the Hester Street Fair – their food lineup is fantastic, as usual.  Go to this market to eat.  And eat some more.  Not to mention the goods, with some of New York’s most creative designers and makers all under the London plane tree canopy on Hester Street.

Smorgasburg:  A frequent Market Pick, Smorgasburg is another market where you’d better be hungry to eat right then and there.  Seriously tasty stuff, freshly baked, grilled, sauced, and scooped.  And the Williamsburg Waterfront Greenmarket has the season’s best produce and tasty food demos.

Sunday, August 21

New Amsterdam Market:  It’s the Second Annual Ice Cream Fest!  Try 10 amazing artisanal ice creams!  Sad to say that advance tickets are sold out, but there will be plenty to taste!  This event is a benefit for the market, so come and show your support!

Fulton Stall Market:  Situated across the street from New Amsterdam, the Fulton Stall Market has a much different vibe.  They’re there to serve the local neighborhood and tourists with delicious food you can grab on the run, fresh produce, and also handmade crafts from members of the {NewNew} Etsy Artisan Group.

Go forth and build up a big weekend appetite!  And if it’s food in the shape of a ball, snap a picture and then eat it.  Mark my words – it’s a trend.

We have a new video blog! Watch this interview with Rebecca from Brewla Bars.  Brewla Bars are frozen pops made from brewed beverages, like coffee and tea.  They have a frozen root beer float bar that I can’t get enough of.  You can find them at the Fulton Stall Market every Sunday.  And please support their awesome Kickstarter Crowdfunding Project!

For my Market Picks this weekend, I’m thinking about Lower Manhattan.  There are some wonderful, established markets that stay enticing and exciting by keeping outstanding sellers and bringing in new ones all the time.  An afternoon stroll through all of these markets takes you through Soho, Nolita, the Lower East Side and points in between.

Saturday and Sunday

Ahkun Summer Pop Up ShopAhkun is a non-profit organization that connects micro-financed companies to the global marketplace.  They are holding a pop-up shop at the Lower East Side Girls Club.  Shop for “style with a conscience,” featuring fair trade organizations, independent designers, sustainable brands, and gourmet popsicles!

St. Anthony’s Market: I love strolling through this market on Houston Street because there are always so many interesting vendors there.  Plus, it’s wide open, right on the sidewalk, and easy to get to.  I bet you’ve walked by it a million times.  So this weekend stop, chat and stop!

Nolita Market:  The Nolita Market is on Prince Street between Mulberry and Spring Streets.  This is another sidewalk market, set against the beautiful backdrop of the brick church wall at the Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral.  It’s a nice walk from St. Anthony’s so make sure you hit both!

The Market NYC – Young Designers Market:  This is a market you have to visit on a regular – and frequent -  basis because there is so much design talent in jewelry, fashion, and accessories.  They have two locations every weekend now, the original at 268 Mulberry, just around the corner from the Nolita Market, and the other at 328 14th St. in the Meatpacking District.

Essex Street Market: This indoor market is a haven for foodie explorers.  There’s a lot to discover, from the cheeses, the breads, and the fresh fish, to the international foods, the handmade chocolates, and the Italian gourmet food shop.  It’s also the home to La Tiendita, the city’s only “girl made and fair trade” social venture business, founded in 1998 by the Lower East Side Girls Club.  So visit their facilities for the Ahkun Market, and then stroll over visit their shop, La Tiendita, at the Essex Street Market for some delicious baked goods!

Have a great mid-summer weekend!  And don’t forget to tell us about your own Market Haul!

Butter Rum Caramel from the Groovy Bakery (photo by James Wesolowski)

Combine caramel with Gosling’s Dark Rum, cream, whole butter, and a pinch of sea salt, and the results are a rich, transporting caramel to drizzle over ice cream or, better yet, lick right off the spoon.  That’s what The Groovy Baker is all about.

Groovy’s owner, Chef Lisa, has a traditional pastry education and extensive professional experience.  Her company combines her love of food, her passion for exploration, and with a discipline and technique that comes from training and experience.

I recently came across this large jar of caramel (I don’t get to write a phase like that often enough), along with beautiful cupcakes, brownies, and cookies, at the Fulton Stall Market.  The Groovy Baker also makes lollipops in flavors like Watermelon Lime, Cherry Cordial, and Grapefruit Rosemary, which was featured in Real Simple Magazine’s 8 Sweet Bridal Shower Treats.  Chef Lisa tirelessly sources for local and organic ingredients, as well as recyclable and biodegradable packages.

Visit with The Groovy Baker at the Fulton Stall Market, and check out her Etsy shop, which may be the happiest site on the internet.

The image above is by Naima Rauam, a fine artist known for her images of the old Fulton Fish Market.  She keeps this institution alive through her watercolors.  You can meet the artist in person every Sunday at the Fulton Stall Market.

Here are this weekend’s Market Picks!

Saturday and Sunday, July 23 and 24

Dekalb Market: This weekend marks the Grand Opening of the new Dekalb Market in Downtown Brooklyn!  This market combines artisans, food entrepreneurs, and agriculture, along with music and educational events.  It is made from upcycled shipping containers, and I cannot wait to see how it turned out!

Better Than Jam Pop Up on Governor’s Island:  Bushwick’s Better Than Jam Coop is running this year’s Etsy artisans coop on Governor’s Island!  Take the free ferry to the island, where you’ll find many of the local market artisans’ work in this historical home-turned-handmade-boutique.

Saturday, July 23

Abingdon Square Greenmarket:  This farmers market feels neighborly and intimate as it wraps around the lovely park in the West Village.  In fact, it actually has 16 farmers and food vendors during the peak season now!  Go and enjoy this sweet market for yourself while it’s bursting with the ripest fruits of the season!

Sunday, July 24

Fulton Stall Market:  The Fulton Stall Market is just such a great place to hang out in the shade, grab a snack, and have a snack and a chat.  The vibe is laid back, and there’s a great variety of things to choose from, including produce, meats, and other staples, as well as frozen pops, coffee, and handmade crafts.  They’re right across the street from the New Amsterdam Market, and it’s easy and lovely to stroll through both!

Greenflea:  The Greenflea is great on a weekend like this one because there is a lot of shade among the vendor tents, and there are also vendors selling inside the school.  So don’t let the heat deter you from visiting one of the best vintage and flea markets in town.

I think we all agree that it’s hot in New York City.  So let’s move along and talk about what we’re going to do this weekend, shall we?  For starters, we’re putting a bottle of water in the freezer tonight so that it will be frozen for tomorrow.  We’ll pull it out in the morning, slather on the sun block, bust out our floppy sun hats, and heading to the markets!

Market Haul July 16-17 2011
Have you heard of “haul videos”?  Usually they are videos created by girls showing us their “haul,” or everything they bought at the mall that weekend.  Well, I get just as excited about the things I find at the artisan, farmer, food and flea markets in New York City!

So here is a photo of My Market Haul for this past weekend.  It doesn’t include all the delicious things I tasted or gobbled up, but I thought it made a pretty collage.  I made it to the markets closest to home on Sunday, namely the Fulton Stall Market and the New Amsterdam Market.  Items in this photo are the following market items:

  • Peaches, Tomatoes and a Maitake Mushroom, Do Re Mi Farms – Perfect!
  • Balsamic Vinaigrette Basico, SchoolHouse Kitchen – Tangy and tasty!
  • Cream Soda Syrup, P&H Soda Co. – As a gift for someone very lucky special.
  • Moses Sleeper Cheese, The Cellars at Jasper Hill – It’s creamy and delicious.
  • The Queens Guard and Ceylon Teas, Bellocq Tea Atelier – Both blends are remarkable, especially iced.
  • Eiffel Tower Ring, UrbanRose – I got three of these for my Francophile friends to ensure we all end up in Paris together very soon.

I will be featuring the other amazing things I ate at these markets during the week.  What treasures did you find?

Happy 4th of July!

I love staying in town when everyone else leaves because it feels like I have it all to myself. But I’ll share New York City with you this weekend if you happened to stay in town or come for a visit!

Here are my Artisan, Farmer, Food and Flea Market Picks for this Fourth of July holiday weekend:

Saturday and Sunday, July 2 – 3, 2011

Antiques Garage: It’s supposed to be a beautiful weekend, but if you’re just too darn hot, go stroll around the Antiques Garage.  It has two full floors of antique and vintage dealers, selling clothing, memorabilia, furniture, jewelry, and many many more treasures.  On the second floor, look through the amazing collection on the tables of Hobbit Rare Books and Prints.

Bleecker Street/Pompeii Artisan Market: To be honest, I walked by this market a thousand times on my way to or from Murray’s Cheese and Faicco’s on Bleecker Street for a prosciutto ball.  But when I actually stopped to look, I was amazed by the wonderful handmade and vintage wares, as well as the sheer variety of styles. You can find Bakelite jewelry, handmade soaps, and sweet vintage hats here.  Check out Monica Jean Davidson’s jewelry designs!  (Bleecker Street between Carmine and Leroy)

Nolita Market: I bet you’ve walked right by this market on your way to or from Soho.  I encourage you to stop and really check out all the amazing artisans there.  Shaya hand-hammered jewelry, Grey 56 fine leather goods, funny tee-shirts and a whole lot more fill the tables along the beautiful brick wall that surrounds the Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Saturday, July 2, 2011

Smorgasburg: I know I’ve been going on about how great Smorgasburg is, and I’ll keep doing it!  Go hungry and bring a totebag.  You will find an incredibly array of prepared foods to eat then and there, and you will want to bring home fantastic artisanal products to cook with and eat later.  Look for SchoolHouse Kitchen’s jams, mustards and Chutneys!

Williamsburg Waterfront Greenmarket: As if Smorgasburg wasn’t great enough, there is a big, wonderful Greenmarket on the site too with almost 20 farmers doing food demos and other family activities.  So many delicious foods are in season right now!

Sunday, July 3, 2011

Fulton Stall Market: There are loads of edible and artisanal treasures at the Fulton Stall Market this weekend down at the Seaport.  Sweets and savories to eat while you shop, as well as produce, fresh fish, dairy, cheese, and baked goods.  This weekend is the debut of Wooly’s Ice, selling shave ice flavored with special syrups and fresh fruits.  Sounds perfect for a holiday weekend!

Have a wonderful Independence Day!

Karen & Andrea in Cape Elizabeth Maine

It’s my middle sister Andrea’s birthday! I thought I’d post a picture of the two of us on the way to the beach in Cape Elizabeth, Maine sometime during the latter half of the 20th Century.  She’s will be coming to New York in a couple of weeks, and we’ll definitely be hitting the markets.  She loves markets as much as I do!  Please tweet her a Happy Birthday message @AndyMike01!

I can’t help but go on about the beautiful weather we’ve been having, which couldn’t be better for strolling through this week’s Market Picks:

Saturday Only

  • Smorgasburg:  This market is such a brilliant idea for food lovers and for the talented and tasty food innovators in the city.  For my own sake, I am hoping the lines have calmed down a little at the Brooklyn Flea’s new food market.  For the market’s sake, I’m sure it will continue to be jam packed with eager eaters! Saturday only

Sunday Only

  • New Amsterdam Market: The market opens this weekend for a season of weekly events.  They are promising the return of our favorite food vendors and also some new ones we will surely fall in love with immediately.  Thankyouthankyouthankyou. Sunday only

Classic Lockets with Artful Images from Urbanrose

What woman doesn’t have a soft spot for lockets?  Didn’t everyone have a teensy locket with a photo of a beloved grandmother inside, or maybe a weensy photo cut out of Tiger Beat Magazine?  Growing up, you had to have a locket and a diary with a lock on it – for privacy reasons, of course.  And the contents of both was extra secret.  But lockets have been surprisingly difficult to find for many years for some reason.  Until now, that is.

Urbanrose creates delicate lockets, both small and large.  Each piece is unique and handmade using delicate images appliquéd to the brass lockets.  The images come in a variety of themes, from famous works of art, landmarks, and vintage photos, to trees and flowers, 1970’s design, wildlife, vintage labels, and much more.  You will definitely find an image that will appeal to every age and every style.  I loved the images of these women in paintings and tapestries on the lockets pictured.

I hope I don’t get in trouble for this scoop, but Urbanrose is collaborating with another of my favorite market superstars, Bugged Out!  Now you can get Bugged Out’s whimsical bugs, veggies, and fruits on a locket!  Only at the Markets of New York City.

You can find Urbanrose’s collections at the St. Anthony’s Market and the Fulton Stall Market most Saturdays and Sundays.
