Weekend Market Picks – October 26, 27 & 28, 2012

The Gowanus Girls market features crafts, designs and food made by women. To be clear, guys are welcome to come and enjoy the market too. It takes place in the enchanting Gowanus Grove, “a little slice of paradise in the middle of industrial Brooklyn.” Sure enough, we came to the canal and saw the twinkly lights and sweet lanterns hanging from the branches of the tall birch trees. The colorful balloons were a sure sign that we were on the right course to get to the market.

Weekend Market Picks, September 29 & 30, 2012 + Luv U Me Organic Perfumes & Scrubs

Perfumes have always had a powerful effect on me. One whiff can evoke a hundred memories. I remember the deep, classic “going out” perfume my mom would dab behind her ears as she and Dad prepared to go to their Gourmet Club dinners when we were kids. I remember my

How can I describe my recent visits with Irixx Screen of D.U.O Gear? I met him at The Market NYC on a recent Sunday, fell under his spell, and then came back the next Wednesday to pick up a tee shirt he’d made in my size (it’s the Artist tee

Attention Francophiles and Foodophiles: Say Bonjour To Our New French Market

This past weekend the Bensidoun Group launched their newest market in New York City on the small plaza next to the Apple Store on 9th Ave. in the Meatpacking District. We went on Opening Day this past Friday, and it was fun to see our friend Sebastien Bensidoun in action, greeting shoppers and vendors and managing the tent flaps to let the air flow through. The market itself is situated a block from the Chelsea Market, which, in my humble opinion, is an advantage for both venues. I have found that markets situated in close proximity to each other benefit from making it easy for shoppers to hop from one to the next, visiting multiple markets rather than just one. There is enough of a distinction between this twice-weekly outdoor market and the large venue that is Chelsea Market to minimize replication of foods. The new French Market also directly serves businesses and visitors in the Meatpacking District and the Far West Village, offering a fresh alternative for breakfast and lunch.

Weekend Market Picks, June 30 – July 1, 2012 + TESAGE Handbags & Totes

I’ve admired TESAGE handbags for several years, although I only recently met their designer, Yukiko Sato. But I feel like I’ve known her for a long time through her designs. She makes lovely, feminine bags and totes with beautiful fabrics in a variety of colors and prints. Yukiko is an experienced costume designer, stylist and kimono dresser, and her work reflects a subtle richness that feels distinctly Japanese to me. She creates a variety of styles, including shoulder bags, cross-body bags, totes and pouches. I recently picked up a TESAGE purse organizer, which is a brilliant invention. It is a lovely fabric bag with pockets and a drawstring handle that you can simply transfer from one purse to another with everything you need in it. No fuss, no muss, no forgotten lip gloss.
