I Scream for Phin & Phebes Ice Cream!

[singlepic id=1512 w=480 h=640 mode=watermark float=center] The Cinnamon Vanilla ice cream from Phin & Phebes that James and I tried at Smorgasburg’s Ice Cream Day was frozen happiness in a cup. The rich vanilla base is the perfect platform to showcase the spicy, warm cinnamon flavors. The texture is just right too: perfectly smooth, with none of the graininess I’ve had in other artisanal cinnamon ice creams. Because it was so hot that day, the ice cream got just a little melty, which is my favorite way to eat it.

And then I learned the story of Phin & Phebes. Frankly, one of the reasons I love writing about the markets is because there is so much inspiration to be found behind every single business. Owners Jess and Crista never intended to go into the ice cream business. They just liked making ice cream, and then it dawned on them that they could bring something new to the world of frozen treats. They started selling their ice creams at the Hester Street Fair and the Brooklyn Lyceum Market, where they got great feedback and began building their business. Then, in 2011, they attended Ice Cream University at Penn State, quit their day jobs and took the plunge full time into ice cream.

Jess and Crista are wonderfully creative with flavors (think Vietnamese iced coffee, banana pudding, and coconut key lime). They concoct all their recipes in their home kitchen and get their dairy from an 8-family coop in New York State. The ice cream is made in small batches with no stabilizers or syrups and hand packed for cold, creamy goodness through and through. These thoughtful elements, combined with the obviously good time Jess & Crista are having, make Phin & Phebes a very special ice cream company.

Phin & Phebes ice cream is in stores, including Whole Foods, throughout New York City and state, NJ, CT and MA. Crista and Jess are not currently selling in any other markets regularly. However, they are available for special events, and they give ample tastings in the shops that carry their products!
