Video of the Day 1/29/2013: Help La Newyorkina Rebuild Her Sweet Kitchen

You know how we can’t help but adore people who do what they love? That’s Fany Gerson of La Newyorkina.

Fany’s Mexican confections reflect the utter joy she takes in what she does, regardless of the long hours, hot days selling paletas (Mexican frozen pops) in the markets and on the Highline, and the everyday challenges of being an entrepreneur. She is the author of two cookbooks, one of which, My Sweet Mexico, was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2011. (Read my review.)

Fany’s commercial kitchen in Red Hook, Brooklyn was badly damaged by the flood waters of Hurricane Sandy. Her paleta machine was destroyed by the salt water. It is a highly specialized piece of equipment, the backbone of her business, and it will cost $20,000 to replace it.

In true La Newyorkina spirit, Fany has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help her rebuild! James and I contributed, and we hope you will too. Her pledge gifts are luscious, but they are really just a bonus. The real gift will be seeing Fany and her crew back out in the food markets around New York City this season with their shiny carts and mouthwatering frozen pops.

SPOILER: Fany is a member of my Food Entrepreneur Panel for Social Media Week on Friday, February 22, 2013! Mark your calendars!
