Weekend Market Picks July 4 & 5, 2015: Classic Clam Chowder For The Holiday Weekend

Happy 4th of July! I love this holiday because it means summertime is in full swing! Plus I love hot dogs!

Go eat a couple of Nathan’s Famous hot dogs (or 61 if you’re Joey Chestnut!), and then walk around the corner to Bon Chovie at Coney Smorgasburg for some fantastic, all-American clam chowder!

I was there for the opening of the Art Walls, and the crowd was literally buzzing about this clam chowder. While I was chatting with Bon Chovie’s Renae Holland, several people came up to her to say, “Somebody just told me I have to try your clam chowder!”

I promise you, it lives up to its hype. It’s smooth and creamy, with chewy bits of clam and a mild and comforting flavor. It is also topped with a sprinkle of deep fried onions, which add a perfect bit of texture. So even though it’s summertime, grab a cup of it because it’s delicious. And then go cool off with a cold Mermaid Pilsener at the Freak Bar, or just jump in the ocean!

And don’t miss the Farmer Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest at the Union Square Greenmarket at noon! (Shortcake provided by our friends at Sycamore Farm!)

Happy July 4th! Enjoy and eat too much like true Americans!
