And now for the Market Picks on what looks to be a glorious weekend!
Saturday & Sunday, June 16 & 17
Artists and Fleas: This fine market is one of the first of this new generation of artisan and flea markets. It features some incredibly talented makers and collectors, as well as tasty food purveyors in a very nice indoor space near the Williamsburg Waterfront. (70 North 7th between Wythe & Kent, 10AM – 7PM, Brooklyn )
American Crafts at Lincoln Center: This weekend is the second weekend of the 36th Annual American Crafts at Lincoln Center. I like this show a lot because it features traditional, high-end American crafts (art glass, wooden objects, handmade jewelry, fiber arts and fashion), and the setting inside the Lincoln Center complex is lovely. Visit my good friends at Meb’s Kitchenwares and get your dad a gorgeous new cheese board or a hand carved wooden coffee mug! (70 Lincoln Center Plaza, Sat. Noon – 9PM, Sun. 10AM – 9PM, Manhattan)
Gourmet Guild: I am in love with this store. It’s not quite the kind of market I normally write about, but it is a wonderful space that sells all local foods, most of which you’ll recognize from the big, traditional food markets I regularly cover. On weekends, they have been having several of the food companies giving out generous samples. The Gourmet Guild is an experiment in promoting artisanal foods and household products that is well worth supporting! (110 Broadway, Sat. & Sun. 8AM – 6PM, M-F 7AM – 6PM, Brooklyn)
Grand Central Market: It’s a great weekend for a picnic in Central Park! Stop by this wonderful food market to pick up bread, cheese, sausages, salads, chocolates, pastries and more before you head into the green. (Grand Central Terminal, 42nd Street and Park Avenue, Manhattan)
Pompeii Flea and Artisan Market: You can’t miss the tables and tents alongside Our Lady of Pompeii on Bleecker Street, each one covered with something interesting. Glass, crocheted metal or Bakelite jewelry, vintage hats, handmade soaps – each weekend is different! (Bleecker Street between Carmine & Leroy, Manhattan)
Sunday, June 16 & 17
Stuyvesant Town Greenmarket: Located inside Stuy Town, this market is very pleasant to stroll through. With a dozen or so farmers and food purveyors, the selection is outstanding. With the farmers set up inside the complex, the market has a nice, homey feel, and the neighbors love it. Visiting this market is a great way to spend a Sunday morning! (South end of Stuyvesant Town Oval, near 14th Street Loop between 1st Ave. and Ave. A, 9:30AM – 4PM, Manhattan)
Just Added: 7th Heaven Street Fair: Many neighborhood shops and New York artisans participate in this annual event hosted by the Park Slope Chamber of Commerce, along with the more standard New York street fair vendors. It makes for a fun day, and it is a very walkable street fair. So if you see something you like but didn’t buy, it’s not a big deal to stroll back and pick it up once you come to your senses! (7th between 18th Street and Flatbush Avenue, Noon – 6PM, Brooklyn)
Enjoy your weekend and let me know which markets you visit. Hopefully we’ll cross paths!
