Weekend Market Picks, May 30 & 31, 2015: Asparagus Extravaganza

Asparagus Season

I prepared my last batch of ramp butter, lamenting the short short season, but then I felt better immediately when I saw these gorgeous green asparagus spears in the Greenmarket today. Asparagus is one of my favorite vegetables. It is so versatile. It goes with meat, poultry, fish, lobster, or as a meal all its own with a side of mashed potatoes. I love cream of asparagus soup, although I could use some good recipe recommendations.

So take advantage of this asparagus extravaganza, and follow it up with some sort of strawberry dessert because they’re in season too!

Weekend Market Picks

Saturday, May 30, 2015

2nd Avenue Community Benefit Festival:  Support local shops and restaurants, as well as many street vendors by strolling and shopping up and down 2nd Avenue. There will be a special section just for locally handmade crafts! Sponsored by the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce. 12PM – 5PM,  3rd Avenue between 66th and 86th Streets, Manhattan

Essex Street Market 75 Year Block Party: This Lower East Side institution deserves to be celebrated! Party in the street with our modern pushcart vendors, who happen to serve some of the most innovative and delicious food in the city. Part of Lower East Side History Month. 12PM – 5PM, 120 Essex Street, Manhattan

Hester Street Fair: Just down the road from the Essex Street Market is the beautiful Hester Street Fair with local artisans, expertly curated vintage clothing and other objects, and first rate local food vendors. Definitely the place to spend an afternoon on the Lower East side. 11AM – 6PM, Hester Street at Essex, Manhattan

Jane Street Block Association Sale: One of my favorite annual events. Neighbors on this storybook street in the West Village empty their closets and hold a huge yard sale. I’ve picked up some great things here from people who know the history of everything on their tables. 11AM to 6PM, on Jane Street between 8th Avenue and Hudson Street, Manhattan

Old Seaport Night Market: Support the Seaport! The Old Seaport Alliance is sponsoring this evening event with local artisans, wine, beer and a raffle. Suggested donation ($10). 6PM – 10PM, at the Fulton Stall Market, 307A Front Street, Manhattan

Saturday & Sunday May 30 & 31, 2015

FIT Maker Showcase: The Fashion Institute of Technology is hosting this two-day event featuring handmade craft artisans, both FIT alumni and others. Should be great! 1oAM – 4PM, Great Hall, Fashion Institute of Technology, 7th Avenue at 27th Street, Manhattan

Riis Park Beach Bazaar: So we’ve said farewell to the Brooklyn Night Bazaar (for now), but you can enjoy their unique brand of entertainment at their new outpost in the Rockaways. Local food purveyors and craft artisans plus beach sports! Amazing, right? 12PM –  Dark Monday – Friday; 11AM – Dark Saturday & Sunday, 157 Rockaway Beach Blvd., Queens

Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit: This is the second of two weekends for this outstanding fine art market, right out on the streets of Greenwich Village! Last week, I fell in love with so much art that I bought a lottery ticket. Excellent handmade craft artisans too. 12PM – 6PM, University Place between East 12th and West 3rd Street, Manhattan

Sunday, May 31, 2015

Park Slope Down To Earth Farmers Market: I love this market because it’s so important to the neighborhood. You can stroll among the farmers and food purveyors and find everything your pantry needs for the week. 10:00AM – 4:00PM, 4th Street at 5th Avenue, Brooklyn

Stuyvesant Town Greenmarket: This farmers market opened for the season in mid-May. It’s a lovely, shady market that provides produce, baked goods, proteins and more for residents of Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village. 9:30AM – 4PM, South end of Stuyvesant Town Oval, Manhattan
