Big Plate of Caribbean Food at Flea Marqueta
The weather is definitely getting cooler, and it is time to start getting yourself prepared for the holidays. But I
don’t mean shopping quite yet. I mean eating.
And by eating, I mean gorging on mouthwatering BBQ at this Sunday’s “El Boar-rio” BBQ at Flea Marqueta in East Harlem. I went to the first El Boar-rio pig roast on September 15th, and I had to sit down and savor every bite of the delicate pork with tequila-infused Korean-style BBQ sauce, rich and flavorful sausage and smoky grilled corn on the cob. It is among the most delicious plates of BBQ I have ever had. Chef Jon Han literally built the smoker by hand the day before the event, and it looks like it will be a permanent fixture under the Metro North railroad tracks.
Flea Marqueta is hosting its second El Boar-rio pig roast on Sunday, inside the Urban Garden Center. The market itself will also be open and featuring local artisans and food vendors. Bring your hungry friends, grab a Sugar Hill beer, and hang out at the communal table in this lovely, definitively urban setting. I’ll see you there!
El Boar-rio at Flea Marqueta, Sunday, September 29, 12PM – 6PM, 1640 Park Avenue at 116th Street. It is also Neighborhood Beautification Day – get there at 9AM to participate! (See more pictures below.)
Weekend Market Picks! These great events are happening this weekend:
Saturday, September 28, 2013
London Terrace Street Fair: London Terrace is a huge apartment building in Chelsea. Every year, residents bring down everything that is taking up space in their homes, and they sell it all on the sidewalk. It is a super-multi–family stoop sale, along with professional flea and vintage vendors and artisans, as well food for munching on while you shop. This event only happens once a year, so don’t miss it! 10AM – 5PM, 24th Street between 9th & 10th Avenue, Manhattan
Queens County Market Fall Harvest Festival: The Queens County Market has two events this weekend. Saturday is the Fall Harvest with Sunnyside Greenmarket. Food vendors and farmers market vendors are joining forces for this fun event. “Live music, pumpkin patch and apple cider!” 10AM – 3PM, Skillman Ave bet 42 & 43 Streets, Queens
Stylist Tent Event at Hester Street Fair: Can you ever have too much style? Apparently, the answer is yes. Hester Street is hosting another fabulous tent sale featuring designer fashion and accessories “from the city’s top stylists, editors, and designers.” Prices start at $10 — so get there when it opens! (Last year I saw the perfect black patent leather Louboutin pumps. Waaay too high-heeled for me, but perfect for you!) 10AM – 6PM, Corner of Hester and Essex Streets, Manhattan
Saturday & Sunday, September 28 & 29, 2013
Mad. Sq. Eats: Madison Square Eats is back for its fall event through October 25th. This outdoor food market features a wonderfully diverse array of local foods, both savory and sweet. Stop by for lunch, or meet your friends after work for a nosh and a beer under the twinkly lights. 11AM – 9PM, triangle between 5th & Broadway and 24th & 25th St., Manhattan
Sunday, September 29, 2013
Flea Marqueta: See Above. 12PM – 6PM, 1640 Park Avenue at 116th Street, Manhattan
Atlantic Antic: Plan on doing a lot of strolling, eating and shopping at what may be longest market/slash street fair in the city. The Antic is not your regular New York street fair. It features hundreds of local artisans and food vendors. Additionally, many of the businesses along Atlantic Avenue extend their storefronts into the street for the day and become a part of this vibrant neighborhood event. 12PM – 6PM, Atlantic Avenue from Hicks Street to 4th Avenue, Brooklyn
Queens County Market Food & Brew: Sunday’s event features another talented and diverse group of local food entrepreneurs. At the last market event, I tasted products from every vendor, and everything was delicious and memorable. Plan on spending a good amount of time enjoying everything on the tables plus Queens brewed beers! 1PM – 5PM, SingleCut Beersmiths, 1933 37 Street, Astoria, Queens
New Amsterdam Market: This significant local and regional food market is back with monthly events this fall to “celebrate and showcase the growers, producers, purveyors, distributors, chefs, cooks, and advocates of an emerging food system dedicated to responsible food production, regional economies, and fair trade.” 11AM – 4PM, South Street between Beekman Street and Peck Slip, Manhattan
