Beautiful colors at the new Grand Bazaar NYC
You can always use stylish blue rain boots!
The truth is, the large flea and antiques market in the schoolyard at 77th and Columbus Avenue has been going through a downward period for the last several years. I still found lovely treasures there, but the volume of vendors and shoppers had gone down dramatically from the crowds that market had once enjoyed.
So I was overjoyed to see that a new management team has breathed so much renewed life, energy, and variety into the market with the launch of the Grand Bazaar NYC!
This new market had a soft launch over the summer to rebuild its vendor base and iron out logistics until their Grand Opening on Sunday, September 11, 2016. It was a beautiful day, bittersweet for obvious reasons, but the market was thriving again. And that was great to see.
You will find a large selection of vintage clothing, furniture, and decor vendors, as well as historical objects of all kinds. Inside the cafeteria are vendors of mostly smaller, delicate items, like porcelain teacups, fine jewelry, eyeglasses, and antique ephemera. Stay on the lookout for sterling silver spoons from Tiffany, an antique Rolex, or a grinning Toby jug on the same tables where elementary school students eat their sandwiches during the week.
Hungry Gnome Scones – crispy on the outside, light and flaky on the inside!
The Grand Bazaar also distinguishes itself from the former market with a luscious array of sweet and savory foods. Snack on Austrian baked goods from Sweet & Salzig, fresh and warm scones from The Hungry Gnome, a big scoop of guacamole from Mr. Guacamole, and numerous other delicious treats. The Bruffin is there too.
This weekend is especially exciting to me because the Grand Bazaar is hosting the first ever jewelry event of its kind! Usually, market managers cap the number of jewelry vendors in their venues, and there are so many talented designers in this town who may end up competing for limited market spaces. In a brilliant maneuver, the Grand Bazaar has invited dozens of jewelry designers to participate in the Artisan Jewelry Bazaar this coming Sunday, September 25th!
Can you really have too much jewelry? No, you cannot. I will see you there.
If you can’t make it this weekend, the Grand Bazaar NYC is open every Sunday from 10AM – 5:30PM at 100 West 77th Street at Columbus Avenue. Here are their upcoming special events:
Sep 25: Artisan Jewelry Bazaar
Dec 03: Grand Holiday Bazaar NYC **Every Saturday and Sunday from Dec. 3 through Dec. 24
Go check out the great new vibe! Proceeds from the market go to support school programming.
