Video: Wild Child Burning Man Styles from Miritika Designs

Meet Tika, owner of Miritika Designs. She is an truly innovative Israeli fashion and accessories designer who sells her fantastic creations at the MarketPlace at St. Anthony’s on Houston Street. This market is open every Saturday and Sunday, and you will find a variety of vendors out there out on the streets of Soho. Tika is there most weekends.

Tika she makes groovy bucket hats and sun hats, multi-textured belts, and artistically sexy clothing. One of her clients described her work “wisdom and wildness.” I think that’s absolutely spot on.

I would add “edgy Bohemian” to the description of Tika’s designs. She uses all natural materials, no synthetics. Some pieces, like the vest below begin as another garment, which she cuts and stitches into something completely different. She hand sews all her clothing and accessories, and she makes all of her hats by hand. The sun hats are made from sheets of real straw, which she molds, fashions, paints, stitches and adorns to turn them into one-of-a-kind pieces.  Tika also makes shoulder bags that are huge, clever, practical and also one-of-a-kind.

Miritika is also a known as a popular Burning Man outfitter for people seeking wild child desert styles. The kimono scarf in the video is the perfect accessory because it has so many uses in just one single piece. And it has fringe.

The colorful zigzags of stitches add a dimension and a bit of drama to her pieces, even if the colors are subtle. I fell in love with one of her hats, a dark blue one with a jingly teal band, and I knew I could not leave it behind. I have lost count of the number of people who ask me about it in the street. One lady high-fived me in Union Square and told me I had hit the jackpot of hats! (Scroll to the last photo below.)

Don’t you think it’s time to add some sexy new pieces to your summer wardrobe? Stop by and visit Miritika for inspiration even if you haven’t gotten your tickets to Burning Man.

Find Miritika Designs and other very cool local artisans on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at The Marketplace at Saint Anthony’s on Houston Street between Thompson and Macdougal Streets in Soho.
