If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m a Francophile. In fact, I had my first Aha! moment about what would become Markets of New York City the day we went to a farmers market in Paris, just blocks from the Bastille (Av. Richard Lenoir, for the curious). In truth, Bastille Day wasn’t a particularly happy day, but it was the beginning of the French Revolution which would end the monarchy. So it’s all good, although Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette did know how to throw a fabulous feast made with fine, fresh local ingredients.
Therefore, I am happy to feature the tasty, traditional treats of Les Canelés de Céline! I learned from lawyer-turned-pastry-chef Celine Legros that canelés are actually made from crepe batter poured into moulds, where they form a crispy caramel crust outside and remain chewy on the inside. Céline makes mini French pastries, including her signature canelés, as well as financiers and custom pastry orders. One of her earliest supporters was Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. For some reason, good things always happen to me in his restaurants.
You may recognize these lovely confections from the Holiday Markets, and I was happy to see Céline and her pastries at the new Chelsea Triangle French Market. We bought a bag of 15 in different flavors, including rose water (pictured), pistachio, chocolate, vanilla, caramel and orange. I tell you, there’s nothing like popping a bite-sized canelé into your mouth with a hot cup of afternoon tea. Filled with flavor, these little lovelies offer up a small taste of the France I love.

Dekalb Market Bastille Day Celebration with The Skint: The Dekalb Market and the skint are hosting this evening event with music, food event, beer, wine and the market’s community of artisan shops. In honor of Bastille Day, they’re having a great lineup of burlesque, cancan, romantic violin and more, with dancing and a French MC. Weeksville Farmers Market: If you’ve never visited the Weeksville Heritage Center, there’s no time like the present. This organization does wonderful work preserving the history of 19th century African Americans. They are holding weekly farmers markets through August 4th, with local foods and rich demo and educational programs. (9AM – 4PM, 1698 Bergen Street, Brooklyn)

Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market & Third Ward’s Member Made: I love it when great organizations team up to bring us a unique and wonderful events like this one.
