Weekend Market Picks, May 19 & 20, 2012: A Whole Lotta Markets Going On

This is one of the busiest market weekends of the season! All of the weekly markets are up and running full out, and so this week I am featuring several annual or semi-annual events. They mostly end between 4 and 5PM, so plan to go early, like the crack of 10AM.

Saturday, May 19, 2012 Only

  1. Bedford Barrow Commerce Village Craft Fair: Enjoy all the charms of Greenwich Village during this annual craft fair that takes place on Bedford, Barrow and Commerce Streets. The fair features wonderful handmade crafts, live music and food, so you should definitely plan on spending at least a couple of hours strolling through the streets and soaking up the shade. (Manhattan, Bedford, Barrow and Commerce Streets, 11AM – 4PM. Map.)

  2. Spring Crafts in Chelsea: This annual fair on a tree-lined street in Chelsea is chock full of wonderful, modern crafts. The New York Etsy Street Team fills 21st Street with high quality, incredibly clever, innovative, and 100% handmade products. The fair features 85 local artists and crafters, as well as artisanal food and a plant sale! Proceeds go to support arts programming at PS 11.  (Manhattan, West 21st Street between 8th & 9th Avenues, 11AM – 4PM)

Sunday, May 20, 2012 Only

  1. Greenwich Village Youth Council’s Fine Art & Designer Crafts on Bleecker: Relive the heydays of the Village when artists could actually afford to live there! This annual event features crafters and fine artists from New York and across the country.  You will find a lovely range of styles, as well as craft technique demos. (Manhattan, Bleecker Street between Hudson and Christopher Street, 10AM – 5PM)

  2. Fabulous 5th Avenue Fair: Park Slope hosts this annual street fair with a distinct neighborhood feel. Stroll through for classic street fair food vendors and also meet some of New York’s best crafters and artisans. There is always a lot of excitement around this fair – go find out why! (Brooklyn, Fifth Avenue between St. John and 12th Street, 12PM – ?)

Saturday & Sunday, May 19 & 20, 2012

  1. The Artisan Bazaar: This lovely craft market is popping up again for a month in the Roger Smith Hotel LAB Gallery. It is a fine collection of artisans selling jewelry, t-shirts, soaps, handmade children’s clothing, and more. The pop-up runs through June 15th, and they will be rotating in new vendors throughout the run. (501 Lexington Avenue at 47th Street, 10AM – 7PM daily through June 15th)

Weekend Shout Outs

There are several other great events you may enjoy:

  1. TECHmunch Food Bloggers Conference: (Friday, May 18th) This is my second year attending TECHmunch, a fantastic conference where people who write about food can meet, learn things, and eat some mighty fine snacks from great sponsors. I’m hosting a panel, Social Feast Why Food Businesses Love Food Bloggers, with Noha Waibsnaider of Peeled Snacks, Ryan Cheney of Raaka Chocolate, and Deboleena Dutta of HerbNZest!

  2. Fishs Eddy Sidewalk Antique Sale: (Saturday, May 19th)  Not only is Fishs Eddy my favorite kitchen and tableware store in the city, they’ve also sold a gazillion copies of my book! They’re selling antiques at this event that haven’t been seen before in the store. Definitely stroll by and check it out! (Manhattan, 889 Broadway at 19th Street)

  3. Olde Time Coney Island Strongman Spectacular: (Sunday, May 20th) This is gonna be fun! My family has roots in Coney Island, and this event harkens back to the beach resort’s Golden Age when men performed amazing feats of strength. My friend Steve Wiener will be participating. He is “a master of combination feats, such as hoisting a 200 pound fire hydrant with his head while lifting a 100 pound cement sphere to his shoulder and levering a 13 pound sledgehammer at the same time.” It’s true. I’ve seen him roll frying pans up with his bare hands like a burrito. (Brooklyn, 1208 Surf Avenue, 1-7PM)

  4. The Great GoogaMooga Festival: (Saturday and Sunday, May 19th & 20th) Food, drink and music, plus Anthony Bourdain and the Big Gay Ice Cream Disco! This is going to be huge, people!(Brooklyn, Prospect Park 1-7PM)

It is going to be a stunning weekend with sunny days in the mid 70’s. So slather on the sun block, grab your tote and meet me at the markets!
