Weekend Market Picks: May 26 & 27, 2012 + Strawberries

Strawberries! The markets are brimming with ripe, sweet, delicious strawberries, like these ones from Kernan Farms at the Union Square Greenmarket this week. We snarfed them up straight from the container, and we saved a few for our waffles yesterday morning. Farewell, Ramp Omelets. Hello, Strawberry Rhubarb Pie!

Several markets are taking a rare weekend off, including SUPER!market and the Fulton Stall Market. But do not fear! There are plenty of great markets open for your shopping and exploring pleasure this weekend!

Saturday Only, May 26, 2012

Hester Street Fair: Hester Street had to postpone the launch of their promising new Hester Nights Market until this coming Thursday, but their Saturday Market is still one of the hottest spots in town for flea finds, artisan wares and fantastic local food. (Manhattan, Saturday, 10AM – 6PM in Seward Park at Hester and Essex Streets)

Saturday and Sunday, May 26 & 27, 2012

Antiques Garage:  I love the Antiques Garage because it is always filled with great objects. And it is an amazing place for people watching. The vintage clothing is abundant. There are always unusual decorative items, and plenty of things to catch your eye — and maybe even inspire you! (Manhattan, 112 West 25th between 6th & 7th Avenues)

Better Than Jam Hand Made Summer Gift Shop on Governor’s Island: They’re back! The New York Etsy Street Team, hosted and managed by the Better Than Jam Coop, is opening their summer weekend boutique in an historic apartment building on Governor’s Island. They have created another handmade wonderland this year, filled with lovely products made by talented local artisans. (Governor’s Island Saturdays and Sundays, The Governor’s Galleries, Governor’s Island, 10AM – 6PM)

Madison Square Eats: This open air food bazaar is a wonderful place to grab lunch or dinner and sample some of the best artisanal food in the city while you enjoy the inspiring view of the Flatiron Building (my second favorite building in the city, btw). In the evening, they turn on the twinkly lights, and the market becomes a cozy beer garden.  (Manhattan, Open daily through June 1st, 11AM – 9PM)

The Market NYC: The MarketNYC (also known as the Young Designers Market) is opening up in a brand new location at 159 Bleecker Street in the Village. It’s a huge space, and I can’t wait to see what they do with it. They have extended their hours significantly as well. (Manhattan, Wednesday – Sunday Noon – 8PM, 159 Bleecker Street)

Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit: The artists are back on the Village streets for another show! I am always blown away by the quality and variety of fine arts at this market. They also have a great collection of artisans selling their handmade products.  This event runs this weekend and next, so make sure you visit and walk slowly so that you don’t miss any details. (Manhattan, Saturday – Monday, See Website for Exact Location)

Keep an eye on the weather, and don’t let it stop you from exploring the markets or gorging on strawberries!
