Weekend Market Picks – September 14 & 15, 2013: Silk Roses by Michèle Bidault

Newsflash: Keep an eye out for my Fall Market Picks segment with Kristin Shaugnessy on NY1! I’ll post the link on Facebook when it’s up on NY1.com!

I recently headed up to East Harlem to visit Flea Marqueta, a new market that launched underneath the Metro North rail lines, just outside La Marqueta, one of the original indoor markets from the 1940’s.

Flea Marqueta’s founders Sara and Dimitri Gatanas have exciting plans for the market, starting with a pig roast this Sunday: El Boarrio. The actual location is in the Urban Garden Center LLC just across 116th Street and also owned by Sara and Dimitri. In addition to Flea Marqueta’s ever growing group of talented artisan, food and flea vendors, El Boarrio will feature “Sugar Hill Beer and Korean style BBQ sauce infused with Harlem’s own Riazul Premium Tequila, and live music by the Marcus Steel Band.

The beautiful silk roses above are handmade by Michèle Bidault, a designer originally from Paris. She has lived in New York for many years, in Harlem to be specific. Her silk roses are absolutely irresistible. They come with a silk ribbon to tie around your wrist as a bracelet or around your neck, or with a pinback. Pluck up a handful of these beautiful flowers and create a garden on the lapel of your winter coat.

Meet me at El Boarrio on Sunday at Flea Marqueta, 1640 Park Avenue at 116th Street! (They may be open on Saturdays too this fall! I will keep you posted.)

Weekend Market Picks

Saturday, September 14

Brooklyn Boro Hall Greenmarket: This lovely year-round farmers market has been serving downtown Brooklyn for 30 years! It is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and check out the photo exhibit of the market over years in the Market Info tent. 8AM – 6PM, on the plaza at Court and Montague Streets, Brooklyn

GrowNYC Shop ‘N Swap: In an effort to promote recycling of good stuff, GrowNYC is hosting a series of neighborhood swaps, starting this weekend. “Bring clean, reusable, portable items such as clothing, house wares, games, books, & toys that you no longer need, and take home something new-to-you, free! You don’t have to bring something to take something. No furniture or large items, please.” 12PM-3PM, MS 35, 272 MacDonough at Lewis near the Utica Avenue, Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

Vegan Shop-Up : This awesome safe-for-all-vegans food and artisan market features over 30 vendors, so bring your appetite and your recycled fiber tote. It’s the last shop-up of the year, so don’t miss it. (You don’t have to be a vegan to love this market!). 12PM – 6PM, Pine Box Rock Shop, 12 Grattan Street, Bushwich, Brooklyn

Saturday & Sunday, September 14 & 15, 2013

LIC Flea & Food: This market really hit the ground running this summer, and they’re not taking their foot off the gas for fall! I love that they are bringing in new and exciting vendors every week while maintaining a wonderful core group that we want to find there every weekend! 10AM – 6PM, 5-25 46th Avenue, Long Island City, Queens

Real Designer Market: I am happy to report that this market is open both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, most likely due to the Feast of San Genaro in the neighborhood. It is becoming known as an important destination for fashion and accessories from NY independent designers. Go pick out something fun for fall! 11AM – 7PM, 268 Mulberry Street, Manhattan

Sunday, September 15, 2013

Flea Marqueta: Per the story above, Flea Marqueta is open on Sundays with a growing collection of artisans and food vendors, and it looks like they may have some great farm produce too! Plus a Pig Roast this weekend! 12PM – 5PM, 1640 Park Avenue at 116th Street, Manhattan

It looks like we’re having some very nice temperatures this weekend! I’ll see  you at the markets!
