Gorgeous, Fragrant Peonies from James Durr Farm at the Greenmarket

Peonies are my very favorite flower in the whole wide world. I love all flowers, but there’s a special place in my heart for peonies. They are absolutely gorgeous and romantic, and they smell so wonderful. This weekend James picked up an armload of different kinds of peonies from James Durr Wholesale Florist out of Burlington County, New Jersey at the Union Square Greenmarket.

Aren’t they magnificent?

Mr. Durr confirmed that he will be back this Saturday with more peonies. I invite you to pick up several bunches and enjoy them while they’re in season! Later today I’ll be posting more closeup photos on the Markets Of New York City Facebook Page!

My Market Treasures May 12 & 13, 2012!

How about the weather this weekend?!  I hope you were able to spend time outside with your mom!

I gave two tours of the World Trade Center Memorial Plaza on Saturday, but James brought home some tasty treats from the Greenmarket.  (I’ve been a volunteer tour guide of the World Trade Center site with the 9/11 Families Association since 2006.) He cooked up the gorgeous, leafy broccoli raab in the photo with some ramp butter and the last of the fat ramps in the market for dinner last night.  He also got several round ruisbrods, but we at them up before I could take their portraits.  Next time for sure!

Sunday we went to Crafts on Columbus, which never fails to impress. We saw some of our favorite designers there, and we met several more amazing people.

  • My mom is coming for a visit in two weeks, so I got her a scarf made from a traditional kimono from Textile Gems. And then I got one for myself because who can resist those gorgeous colors?
  • We also picked up some teensy, hand-hammered square earrings in sterling silver from Shaya Fine Handcrafted Jewelry for my sister-in-law. She loves petit jewelry, and she deserves a present just because she’s awesome.
  • Her daughters (our nieces) love kitties, and we thought they’d like these Kudu-lah Critters. They deserve a present too, so we picked up Squppy (bottom left) and Moxie (bottom right) to put up in their bedroom. Squppy is half squirrel, half puppy, and Moxie is a cat-fox. They’re a couple.

Which markets did you visit this weekend?

Just a heads up: there are a TON of market events going on next weekend! I’ll post my Market Picks on Thursday so that you can plan your strategy for hitting them all!

Mom and the Girls on the Tropic of Cancer in Mexico

Happy Mother’s Day!

Thank you, Mom, for taking me traveling and for being smart, righteous and and stylish.

Here’s a picture of Mom with me and my sisters on the Tropic of Cancer in Mexico. (I’m the short one with the dirty knees.)

Love Love Love you!

Lemon Blueberry Ice Cream Macaron from Macaron Parlour

We went to visit Mad. Sq. Eats this afternoon to get some more macarons for the weekend from Macaron Parlour. Lo and behold, Macaron Parlour Co-Founder Christina Ha handed us this miraculous gem – an Ice Cream Macaron! This one is filled with lemon ice cream with blueberry jam swirls, and it is absolutely delicious. In fact, it tastes just like summer. Madison Square Eats features great artisanal food vendors, and it is open in Worth Square (just north of the Flatiron Building) through June 1, 11AM – 9PM. Congratulations to the newlyweds Christina and her groom Simon Tung!

Here are my Market Picks for Mom:

Saturday & Sunday, May 12 – 13, 2012

Crafts on Columbus: This is the last weekend for the Spring Crafts On Columbus event. This traditional craft market is brimming with handmade clothing designs, accessories, jewelry, and other high quality creations that your mom would love to choose from. The venerable Greenflea is right across the street for more strolling and shopping, and on Sunday the 77th Street Greenmarket is hosted inside the schoolyard with the Greenflea. (Manhattan, Columbus Avenue between 77th & 81st St.)

Dekalb Market: Spend the afternoon with Mom strolling through the artisanal boutiques and handmade crafts at the the Dekalb Market in Downtown Brooklyn. Food, drinks, shopping and music — all amidst the cleverly repurposed shipping containers. And how about some special Mother’s Day Offers? Happy Mother’s Day indeed! (Brooklyn, 138 Willoughby Street at Flatbush Avenue)

Fulton Stall Market: I really love this market for its energy and the diversity of vendors there. They have farm produce, delicious prepared foods, crafts, and even a wonderful fine artist each weekend. The setting in the Seaport is a great destination for exploring a different part of the city with Mom this weekend! (Manhattan, 94 South Street)

Hell’s Kitchen Flea: The Hell’s Kitchen Flea is a fantastic place to take your mom if she likes a good treasure hunt! And Sunday is the Food Truck Bazaar, featuring The New Shorty’s On Wheels, Red Hook Lobster Truck, Coolhaus, Big D’s Grub Truck, Kelvin Natural Slush, Palenque Colombian Food Truck, Valducci’s Original Pizza, Milk Truck Grilled Cheese! Are Food Trucks the new Sunday Brunch? (Manhattan, 39th Street & 9th Avenue)

Pompeii Flea and Artisan Market on Bleecker Street: This sweet market is in full swing on the sidewalks of Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. Take some time to stop and visit with all the market sellers, as they have some real treasures on their table. This year they are welcoming several new and exciting vendors into their midst! (Manhattan, Bleecker between Carmine & Leroy)

St. Anthony’s Market: If location is everything, this market has it all. Situated under colorful umbrellas along the fence of the Shrine Church of St. Anthony of Padua on Houston Street’s wide sidewalks, the market features a nice variety of craft artisans, world crafts, and awesome look-alike sunglasses. Spend the day with Mom in Soho, and make sure you hit this market along your travels. (Manhattan, West Houston and Sullivan Street)

And a shout out for the Big Fat Flea on Sunday! I hadn’t heard of it before, but it looks like fun! (Manhattan, 208 West 13th Street)

You know your mom just wants to spend time with you this weekend. So take her by the hand and go explore the city together by visiting the markets that are, coincidentally, also chock full of awesome gifts for moms!

hybrid-orchid-from-silva

The orchid is a gorgeous gift for Mother’s Day.  They are colorful, stunning and alive, and the blooms can smell wonderful and last for months.

Silva Orchids at the Union Square Greenmarket is the place I recommend for high quality, healthy and unique orchids. You can find the classic cattleyas, as well as other exotic hybrids like the beautiful burgundy bloom in the photo.  Joseph and Beth Silva can help you pick out the perfect variety for the light in your mother’s home and tell you how to care for them and get them to bloom again.

My dad collected orchids all over the world, from the jungles of Brazil to the Arctic. James and I have a great collection of orchids that we rescued from the trash room of our building. People just throw them out after the blooms have gone. But we know better. One of our rescued orchids bloomed from November 2011 until just this past week. They are amazing plants. There is nothing more rewarding than getting an orchid to bloom.  Except maybe the smile on your mom’s face when you hand her one on Sunday.

The Silvas are at the Union Square Greenmarket every Wednesday and every other Saturday. Luckily for us, they will be there this coming Saturday in time for Mother’s Day!

Sweet Pink Hippo from Sweatertoys

The thing about this sweet pink hippo from Sweatertoys, the brown elephant, and the red squirrel, is that they seem so soulful. They have expressions and characters all their own. And because they are handmade from the softest of recycled sweaters and vintage fabrics, each little animal is one-of-a kind.

Designer and maker Caitlin Wicker has been making these toys for the past six years out of her Brooklyn home. Check out her website to see more of her Forest Friends and remarkable Sea Creatures Collections. She has started selling patterns too so that you can make your own fuzzy bunny out of an old favorite sweater.

Meet Caitlin and her lovely creatures in person at the upcoming New York Etsy Street Team Spring Crafts in Chelsea event on Saturday, May 19th (on 21st Street between 8t & 9th Avenues)!

Do You Recognize This Earring from the Union Square Holiday Market?

I received an email from the person who purchased this earring and necklace set at the  Union Square Holiday Market in December.  She has lost one of the earrings, and she would love to contact the jewelry designer who made them so that she can replace the missing earring. But she doesn’t have the name of the designer, and the holiday market team does not recognize these particular pieces.  I don’t recognize them either.

So I thought I’d post this image here to see if any of you know the name of the designer or company who made them!

If you recognize these earrings or the style, or if you are the person who made or sold them at the holiday market, please send me an email at Karen@MarketsOfNewYork.com!

Here’s hoping we can solve this mystery.  Thank you for your help!

My Dear Father-In-Law Fred Wesolowski

I have been absent from the blog for a few days because my wonderful, witty, loving, mensch of a father-in-law Fred Wesolowski passed away suddenly last Friday in Buffalo, NY. It has been a whirlwind of shock, acute sadness, planning, mourning, and finally celebrating. And eating.

I wanted to say something about Fred here because he was a remarkable man, and I am going to miss him terribly.

Of course the family has been amazing. And the outpouring of support from everybody who knew and loved Fred has been wonderful. It doesn’t make it any less sad, but it’s comforting to the family to know how many people cared about him. And the fact is that he was healthy and vital until suddenly he wasn’t (he had a heart attack in his home). Many people at the two-day wake remarked that he was “88 going on 60.” As for me, I just loved him and thought he was a great father and a wonderful person. Generous, gracious, hilarious, musical, athletic and a real gentleman. He was ALWAYS there when you needed him. Unconditionally.

Fred’s is a true American story from the Greatest Generation. He was a child through the Great Depression and served as a military policeman in India during WWII. He participated in Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps and later studied cosmetology under the GI Bill. He owned Fred’s Beauty Salon in Buffalo’s East Side in the 1950’s and 60’s and was a master of the “shimmering updo.”  He gave me a beehive hairdo once at Christmas, using bobby pins from the old salon. It looked awesome and 60’s-licious, but it felt like a Home Lobotomy Kit.

Fred later sold the salon and became a roofer and a Union leader at the Roofers Local 74.  He went skiing until he was 80 or so, and then he walked 2 miles a day and bowled in several leagues until he died. Mary at the bowling alley was called about his death immediately because the league was his family too and we didn’t want them to find out about it in the paper. In fact, the entire daytime staff at the Thruway Lanes showed up at the wake in their bowing jackets. And they sent the largest, most beautiful wreath of the bunch. Fred also made the perfect Manhattan and had a gorgeous baritone voice.

He was a strapping fellow too. One Christmas I went with him to the local bakery to pick up fresh dinner rolls, and I had to body block for him to fend off the little old ladies in the bakery who were fawning over him as we all waited for the warm bread. They could not resist his smile, his charisma or his full head of hair. He loved it, and I couldn’t blame them. I felt like Justin Bieber’s body guard in a sea of crazed, grey haired tweeners.

When his wife Dee became unwell two years ago, Fred stepped up to the plate. He learned to cook at age 86. He managed the complex medical bills and medications and advocated for Dee when doctors just wanted to prescribe more drugs. He adored his wonderful kids and grandkids, and they adored him right back.

Fred and I had the same sense of humor. When either of us had heard a good joke, we’d call and have a huge laugh together. Luckily, I called him early last week with a doozy. He laughed and laughed. And that’s how I’ll always remember him.

Thank you for reading about this remarkable, wonderful man. The obituary James wrote appeared in the Buffalo News.

Ebb & Flow Soaps and Candles at Dekalb Market

My husband James loves the fact that there are many wonderful soap designers in New York City, and that he never has to settle for a bar of Dove or Lava at the supermarket anymore.

One great example comes from the lovely container stores at the Dekalb Market, where we met recently with Rupal Bhindu, founder of Ebb and Flow NYC.  Ebb and Flow makes a handcrafted selection of soaps with unique scents like sweet pea, brown sugar fig, and amethyst.  Ebb and Flow soaps are made from plant-based essential oils and are hypoallergenic and mostly vegan.  An accompanying line of soy candles features amber gris, plumeria, and blood orange.  All Eb and Flow’s products come in striking and stylish packaging.

Ebb and Flow is available at the Dekalb Market in Brooklyn (Willoughby Street @Flatbush Avenue – Tuesday through Sunday) along with many other local food, fashion and accessory designers and vendors.
