You know how sometimes you see something somewhere that just makes you happy? Well, I felt that way when I came across this bicycling unicorn onesie from Nightly Doodles at Artists & Fleas in Chelsea Market last week at A&F’s Third Thursday event. Jenipher Lyn is a graphic designer and jewelry maker who recently moved here from Florida. She draws something each night, and she has turned her sweet, whimsical, funny images into cards, pendants, onesies, t-shirts, totes and even
Imagine a forest of giant asparagus spears just next to a lake of drawn butter. That’s what I did when I saw this lovely community of fresh green stalks from Cedar Hill Farm/Kernan Farms at the Greenmarket. Asparagus season is another of my favorite times of year. I make plans for asparagus soup, roasted asparagus, asparagus tarts, and many other delights, but my bunches never make it beyond a quick steam and a splash of lemon juice. It just seems silly to do anything mor
It’s strawberry season! I feel as though James should be making strawberry rhubarb pies (he has a special magic with pies), but the strawberries are so sweet and delicious that it is impossible not to eat them all straight from the container. Kernan Farms out of Cumberland, NJ brought these plump, luscious beauties to the Abingdon Square Greenmarket on Saturday. Once we polished off this batch, we got some more on Monday at Union Square. Can’t wait for Wednesday’s market!

A lot of people think the farmers markets shut down for the winter. Most of them do, but seventeen Greenmarkets are open each week, and Community Markets is partnering with the Makers Market at the Old American Can Factory to hold an indoor farmers market in Gowanus starting this weekend. I love the markets in the winter: I feel like some kind of pioneer, bundling up first thing in the morning when it’s 22ºF outside to go out for provisions. (When it’s warm outside, it’s “f
[nggallery id=5] Welcome to Markets of New York City! I visited the amazing, fun, gritty, tasty, and incredibly rich markets of New York City over the past year, took 6,000 photos, and wrote a guidebook, “Markets of New York City; A Guide to the Best Artisan, Farmer, Food and Flea Markets,” coming June 2010 from The Little Bookroom. I have launched this blog to accompany the guidebook, and also to continue to support the markets every day by sharing information and experienc
