Weekend Market Picks May 10 & 11, 2014: Juli Ra Designs & More for Mother’s Day

Juli Ra Designs Red pink crocheted necklace - 2014-05-07 at 15-15-20

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone! If you haven’t told your mom how much you love and appreciate her recently, do it this weekend. And better yet, give her something incredibly special as a token of your affection and to make up for everything annoying you’ve ever done. Best of all, take her with you to a market and let her pick out her own gift! You know you owe her big time.

I met up with the talented and lovely Juli Ra of Juli Ra Design this week. I absolutely love crocheted jewelry – the combination of metalwork and crochet which is usually associated with fiber arts. Julie’s necklaces are scrumptious. She has a beautiful sense for color combinations. She also makes bracelets and breezy earrings. Her Hawaiian background shines through in her lush designs. Your mom will adore her jewelry.

You can find Juli on Sundays at the Greenflea on the Upper West Side and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Broadway French Market, just a block from Macy’s.

Weekend Market Picks: Mother’s Day Edition

Saturday, May 10, 2014

Brooklyn Flea Record Fair: Wowza! If you’re into vinyl, do not miss this event. 50 record vendors (stores, collectors, and labels) will be selling thousands records. There will also be a DJ and the spectacular fare from the Smorgasburg food vendors. 11AM – 6PM, Smorgasburg, 90 Kent Avenue at N. 7th Street, Brooklyn [Map}

Harlem Eats Food Truck and Street Food Market: OPENING DAY! Launching this weekend, Harlem Eats will be holding food events every Saturday till November. This weekend’s lineup includes 7+ of New York’s favorite food trucks and street vendors. If you’re in the neighborhood, go there and eat! 11AM – 6PM Frederick Douglass Blvd. between 117th & 118th Street, Manhattan  [Map]

Real NYC Market: Bring your Mom and have her pick out something stylish and fabulous from some of NY’s most innovative fashion and jewelry designers. Note the new location for this weekend, a bit further downtown and just a short walk from the Hester Street Fair. Definitely visit both!  11AM – 7PM, 109 Mulberry Street, Manhattan [Map]

Shop n Sip: Bring your mom and your girlfriends for a afternoon and evening of shopping for locally made products and a sip of wine. There’s a $5 entry fee for wine, hors d’oeuvres and raffle entries. 3PM – 8PM, Black River Dance Studios, 345 Lenox Avenue between 127th & 128th Street, Manhattan [Map]

Saturday & Sunday, May 10 & 11, 2014

Artists & Fleas Vintage Showcase: Check out this special shopping event from Artists & Fleas! 15+ vintage sellers from New York and other parts will be selling classic styles in a gallery setting.  11AM – 8PM, Openhouse Gallery, 201 Mulberry Street and 168 Bowery (2 venues), Manhattan

Crafts On Columbus: For 34 years, over 100 local craft artisans have been selling their beautiful, handmade creations on the sidewalk alongside the Natural History Museum. This event may be the last time it takes place, although I am  hopeful that the community’s civic activities will be able to bring it back for many more years. Bring your mom and let me know what Mother’s Day gift she picks for herself this year! 10AM – 7PM Rain or Shine, Columbus Avenue between 77th and 81st Street, Manhattan [Map]

ID Pop Shop: Lucky for us, this designer pop up event has been extended for a week through Sunday, May 18th! Bring Mom to Chelsea Market for lunch and enjoy shopping with her directly from some of New York’s finest fashion, accessories and decor designers. 10:30AM – 7:30PM, 75 9th Avenue, inside Chelsea Market, Manhattan  [Map]

Nolita Market: Does your mom like to stroll through Soho? Maybe go to brunch at a favorite downtown spot? Bring her by this sidewalk market on Prince Street. She’ll find jewelry, accessories, hats and more, and she will meet designers who make everything on their tables. 11AM – 7PM, Prince Street between Mulberry & Mott, Manhattan [Map]

NY Bike Jumble: Thanks to the skint for bringing this event to my attention! Looking for a bike (used or new), or a helmet? Or any other bike accessories? Or bike-related art? Essentially, if you like biking and bikes, don’t miss this bike market! 10AM – 4PM, Old Stone House at Fifth Avenue and 4th Street [Map]

Sunday, May 11, 2014

Greenflea and the West 79th Street Greenmarket: You can’t go to Crafts On Columbus and not hit the Greenflea! This classic Upper West Side Flea Market takes place in a schoolyard and a cafeteria every Sunday of the year. In addition to some of my favorite flea market vendors, Greenflea also features outstanding handmade craft artisans and excellent antiques.  The beloved neighborhood farmers market bunks with the Greenflea while Crafts On Columbus takes place. So we shoppers can visit three beautiful and quite distinct markets with just one subway stop, at least on Sunday! Greenflea: 10AM – 6PM, Columbus Avenue between 76th and 77th Street West, Manhattan [Map], Greenmarket: 9AM – 5Pm, Columbus Avenue between 78th & 81st Streets, Manhattan [Map]

Park Slope Farmers Market: OPENING DAY! The Park Slope Farmers Market, managed by Down To Earth Markets, is one of my favorite farmers markets. I love the neighborhood setting and the variety of foods available, including produce, artisanal pasta sauces, pickles, Indian sauces, baked goods and more! 10:00AM – 5:00PM, Old Stone House at Fifth Avenue and 4th Street, Manhattan [Map]
